GRT Runways

The GRT system will feature dedicated median bus lanes, generally with two lanes at stations (to allow overtaking) and one lane between stations.
BRT runway
The BRT roadway will have overtaking lanes at stations and single lanes between stations. Overtaking lanes at stations are essential for Guangzhou to achieve the high capacity which is needed. The roadway should be strengthened with concrete paving in the vicinity of stations. The BRT runway will be paved in a different colour to assist with enforcement of lane segregation. Lane dividers will be used, though it will be possible for BRT vehicles to enter and leave the dedicated lanes at many points along the corridor.
Intersecting BRT corridors
For the special case of intersecting BRT corridors, a BRT-only elevated roundabout is proposed as a general design approach. In the first corridor this will be located at the intersection of Tianhe Road and Tianhe East Road (see rendering).

Since the Phase I BRT has few buses operating in Tianhe East Road, regular buses approaching the intersection from Tianhe East Road will also be allowed to use the roundabout. If regular buses enter Tianhe Road (the BRT corridor), they will exit from the segregated bus lanes immediately upon exiting the BRT roundabout ramp.
