Public Space Improvements
The most successful BRT and busway projects such as Bogota, Brisbane, Seoul and Curitiba, do more than simply improve the bus system. Such projects are at the forefront of wider efforts to transform the city into a more attractive, liveable and economically vibrant place.
Public space improvements
The BRT system in Zhongshan Av features public space improvements in several locations including a proposed transit mall in 大沙地 between Zhongshan Av and the 港湾路 Metro station. This transit mall will allow only BRT vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists; no motorized vehicles will be permitted to enter.
Currently, this road is closed to traffic due to metro construction, and it is not causing any major traffic bottleneck. The proposal is to allow the BRT system to operate on this road but to restrict access to mixed traffic. A rendering of the 大沙地 transit mall is shown below.
A similar example from Bogota is shown below. This transit mall concept would be used to improve commercial activity along this part of the corridor.
