GRT-Metro Integration

The Guangzhou BRT offers excellent potential for integration with the metro. Passengers will be able to move conveniently between metro and BRT stations.
Mass transit network development
The BRT corridors should be part of a plan to develop BRT to form a city-wide mass transit network with the Metro. Numerous points of BRT-metro integration are evident in the proposed Phase I, II and III BRT network which could be implemented and operational by the end of 2010.
The Phase II BRT would have a total of 95 routes (including the 23 Phase I routes). Phase II – based on current demand alone – would have more than 900,000 passenger boardings inside BRT stations each day and 1.6 to 2 million passenger trips each day would be made on BRT buses inside a BRT corridor. With a growth of 7% per year and conservatively estimating a 10% mode shift and synergistic benefit (including from cars, motorcycles, pedestrians, cyclists and other non-BRT bus routes), the daily passenger boardings inside a Phase I and Phase II BRT system operational by the end of 2009 would be more than 1 million passengers.
Metro transfer stations outside the corridor
Guangzhou's BRT would be the first with stations separate from the BRT corridor. An additional BRT station outside the main BRT corridor is proposed for 广州火车站, serving four of the Phase I BRT routes. This station will serve around 3,500 passengers per hour in the peak period in Phase I, and more than 7,000 passengers per hour in Phase II.
Metro integration at BRT stations
Renderings of possible physical integration design for these transfer stations are depicted below. The BRT system will be physically integrated with the Guangzhou Metro, making it easy and convenient for passengers to transfer between the two systems.
The recommended Phase I BRT corridor on Zhongshan Rd has excellent Metro integration potential. At 3 locations on the trunk corridor the Phase I BRT system will have a discounted or free interchange with Metro lines 1 and 3. The Phase 1 BRT system will also connect to the Metro Line 2 at the 广州火车站 station.
The recommended BRT Phase I corridor on Zhongshan Av would have four points of direct Metro integration: 体育中心, 石牌桥, 岗顶, and 广州火车站. The recommended Phase II BRT corridor has 12 additional points of direct BRT-Metro integration.
