GRT Fares

 

Preliminary analysis suggests that Guangzhou's BRT will be sufficiently profitable not to require any increase in fare levels.

Fare level

The average fare on the new BRT system should remain 2 yuan, the same price as the current air conditioned buses. The additional profitability of the new system should be used to pay for higher quality, cleaner buses, and better bus maintenance, rather than to reduce the fare. This is because many studies show that over time low quality bus service is more likely to alienate riders than higher fares.

Flat or distance-based fare

The fare model for the GRT system has not yet been finalised. However, most likely is that a ticketing system will be selected that has the possibility for distance-based fare collection. The fare structure would nonetheless give discounts for longer distance trips. A decision about the final fare structure will be made after different scenarios are tested for optimization of ridership and profit. Equity considerations will also influence the fare model decision.
