GRT Passenger Demand

Buses are the main mode of transport in Guangzhou, accounting for more than one third of all non-walking trips taken in the city. The Phase I BRT system operational by the end of 2009 will have more than 350,000 passenger boardings inside the BRT stations, and an additional 300,000 boardings on BRT buses operating outside the BRT corridor.

Daily passenger demand

The BRT system on Zhongshan Av will be a major mass transit corridor. The system will have a peak morning passenger flow of more than 20,000 passengers per hour in one direction. A Zhongshan Av BRT will have more than 350,000 passengers boardings within the BRT corridor each weekday.

This level of daily and peak ridership will make Guangzhou's BRT the highest capacity BRT system in the world along with Bogota's TransMilenio and more than double the peak passenger flows of any other BRT system either implemented or in planning in Asia.

Peak hour boarding and alighting

The morning and evening peak hour boarding and alighting at BRT stations in the Phase I corridor - based on the current bus demand and not yet including any mode shift or growth factor - is illustrated below.

The largest passenger boarding demand in the morning is at Tangxia and Tianhe Gongyuan, with the largest alighting demand at Tiyu Zhongxin, Gangding and Shida Jida.

In the evening peak period (below) the largest passenger boarding demand is at Tiyu Zhongxin, Gangding and Shida Jida.

Passenger demand in a possible phase II BRT system

Phase II BRT passenger demand analysis, based on the possible Phase II BRT network and Phase II BRT routes, has been completed.

The BRT stations with the biggest passenger demand and bus frequency after Phase 2 is implemented are:

The Phase II passenger demand for all stations is shown following.

Phase II BRT passenger boarding (blue) and alighting (green) demand, morning peak passengers per hour

Phase II BRT passenger boarding (blue) and alighting (green) demand, evening peak passengers per hour
