Park and Ride, Bike and Ride

Park and Ride facilities for car drivers and bike and ride for cyclists involve the provision of parking spaces near a mass transit line, so people can drive / cycle to a station on the BRT line, park their cars / bikes and take the transit service into the city centre. A Park and Ride facility at an outer busway station in Brisbane, Australia is shown in the figure below. As part of a major busway extension to be operational in 2007 Brisbane is also currently constructing a CBD Bicycle Centre which will be equipped with showers and bike storage facilities.

Park and Ride can provide benefits for the city, drivers and cyclists, the Metro, property developers and the BRT system. Park and ride promotes a direct mode shift from car to BRT, thus reducing the number of cars driven into the city centre. It benefits the BRT system and Metro by providing extra system passengers, and park and ride benefits car drivers by allowing them to save time, enjoy a more comfortable, less stressful and more productive journey into the city, and save money on parking costs. Finally, benefits to property developers arise from the potential of combining Park and Ride with major commercial developments such as shopping centres.

Two potential locations at the eastern end of the Zhongshan Av BRT corridor have been identified for Park and Ride and Bike and Ride implementation, as shown in the figure below. The first of these could also serve the Line 5 Metro. Both sites could be accessed via side roads.

Further analysis is required to assess the likely demand, whether it is feasible to develop multi-tier parking, and whether the development can be combined with a commercial building, along with the optimal pricing structure, ownership and operation of such a facility.

Bike and Ride facilities should involve as a basic prerequisite building bicycle parking facilities at as many BRT stations as possible, and should also include bike rental and repair services at major attraction points.

Bike lanes

Continuous segregated bike lanes are proposed for the entire length of the BRT Phase I corridor.
