Benefits for Passengers
The main benefit of BRT in Guangzhou is the huge passenger time savings for bus passengers. Passengers will save a combined more than 80,000 hours each day after Phase I is implemented.
Passenger time savings
Passenger time savings are the main reason for implementing BRT. BRT system passengers can move much faster than the current bus operating speeds, with express routes exceeding 30km/hr average speed.
Huge passenger time savings – more than 80,000 passenger-hours each day – could be achieved with a BRT implemented in Zhongshan Av. A passenger travelling along the Zhongshan Av BRT corridor in the morning and returning in the evening would spend 54 minutes less time on the bus than they do now.
Similarly huge time saving benefits are possible in the Phase II BRT corridors.
Comfort and convenience
As well as saving time, the passenger experience will be greatly improved.
- Passengers will no longer be forced to wait in the sun and rain for buses (see video of current situation)
- BRT stations will be spacious and designed according to the number of passengers using the station. Passengers will no longer be crowded onto small waiting platforms.
- Currently many passengers during peak periods cannot board buses because they are too full. The much higher capacity of the Guangzhou BRT system will overcome this capacity limitation.
- Security will be greatly improved.
- Getting on and off the bus will be much easier, with level boarding and alighting (see video)
- Passengers will not need to wait anxiously for the next bus. Next bus information screens will be provided showing the time of arrival of the next bus, for each route.
- Bus routes will be organised into sub-stops which group the routes into common destination areas. This means that (unlike the present situation) passengers can wait at the same substop for alternative routes going to the same area.
- The BRT vehicles themselves will be spacious and comfortable, offering a fast and smooth ride.
