Benefits for Bus Operators and Drivers

Faster operating speeds mean bus operators need less buses to serve the same number of passengers, and maintenance and other operational costs are also lower. BRT's operational savings for bus operators will enable the government to leverage private sector investment in system buses and the fare collection system.
Operating cost savings
Because the buses would be able to travel a lot faster than before, and because higher capacity buses will be used, the same number of passengers that are currently served with around 800 buses could be served with around 400 buses in Zhongshan Av. This means that while private bus operators would have to buy some 400 new buses, they would be able to offset this cost by the redeployment of around 800 existing buses to other routes in the city. The GRT system will be considerably more profitable per passenger and per bus-kilometre than existing buses.
Operators currently have bus fleet expansion programs in place to meet the increasing demand, so the buses which are replaced will not be wasted. The reduced bus fleet requirements represent operational savings not just in capital cost of buses, but in fuel, maintenance, drivers, storage and other costs.
Improved working conditions for drivers
BRT drivers will benefit from improved working conditions, including more professional management as well as more comfortable driving conditions. The faster speeds, uninterrupted lanes and pre-board fare collection - meaning drivers do not need to supervise boarding passengers at BRT stations - will reduce the level of stress on drivers.
